Job Summary/Basic Functions

Under the broad oversight of a faculty member, the Staff Scientist will be expected to perform independent or team-based science research. Incumbent will design, organize and conduct highly specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols and procedures and in some cases design new protocols; prepare and submit manuscripts and grant applications, and present data in lab meetings, seminars, and at national scientific meetings; assume general responsibility for scientific operations of the laboratory; participate in the training, supervision and guidance of junior technicians, students and postdoctoral fellows.

A Staff Scientist position is immediately available to study the mechanisms of aging, synaptic structural plasticity, and neurodegeneration using Drosophila and mouse models. Working under the general guidance of the Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will carry out independent and collaborative research, design and perform experiments, prepare manuscripts, and present findings at meetings. This position will also involve helping with laboratory operations and mentoring junior researchers.
Strong candidates should have excellent experimental skills in molecular biology and biochemistry, and enthusiasm for basic research. Experience in genetics and neuroscience is preferred but not required. Comprehensive training will be provided, and motivated individuals will find opportunities to develop toward an independent research career.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: PhD

Required Field of Study: Basic or Health Sciences

Type of experience required to perform the job: 0-2 years of postdoctoral experience

Substitution: MD or DDS or DVM may also be acceptable
