Job Summary/Basic Functions
This is skilled trades work mainly performing preventative maintenance work on mechanical systems and related fields such as plumbing and electrical.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
Possession of a 2nd class license in steam boilers and air conditioning.
Must have a current driver's license.
This position is considered an essential personnel position and must be available to respond to campus emergencies after normal business hours and during campus closures.
The employee may be assigned to the emergency team that remains on campus and or evacuates to an off-site location during emergency events.
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of energy management systems.
Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of energy management systems.
Ability to operate, maintain, and repair of energy management systems.
Ability to use hand tools and power tools and equipment properly.
Ability to read and clearly understand blueprints.
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to carry, erect, climb, and maneuver on ladders and/or scaffolds; work in tight and awkward spaces; work off of roofs, cat walks, and other elevated areas.
Ability to carry or otherwise move loads of 50 lbs. or more (pipe, wire, toolboxes, etc.).
Ability to understand and apply University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges.
Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work area in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries to other people or damage to the vehicles.
Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Other Information About the Position
LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking highly skilled applicants for the position of Operating Engineer Master (Building Systems). There are multiple vacancies.
The starting rate of pay is $21.05 per hour and the 1st Quartile rate of pay is $25.26 with an additional $1 Longevity Pay, $2 Shift Differential and $3 weekend Pay for hours worked only. Rate of pay may be adjusted dependent upon applicants’ experience and qualifications.
Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
1. Performs preventive maintenance tasks on building mechanical equipment and components
2. Performs preventive maintenance tasks on pumps, motors, control systems, piping and other equipment
3.Operates, monitors and controls system wide output
4. Operates building mechanical systems including firing up steam boilers, starting and stopping chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC equipment
5. Perform minor projects as assigned on the entire campus that may include pipefitting, mechanical equipment, electrical circuits and painting
6. Takes immediate action to personally stop unsafe acts if delay to inform supervisor may allow accident to occur
7. Performs chemical and softener tests
8. Blows down boilers
9. Reads gauges to check water levels, steam pressure., and operation. of valves and auxiliary pumps
10. Assist other trades with preventive maintenance tasks
11. Special events work, Campus maintenance emergencies, Work orders

Hours of Operation: 8:00 am -4:30 pm Monday - Friday

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience or training in the operation or maintenance of large stationary engines or mechanical equipment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
For those positions in which incumbents will be working with and handling refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).
Certifications or Licenses Preferred: Possession of a 2nd class license in steam boilers and air conditioning.
