Job Summary/Basic Functions

This is work assisting refrigeration/HVAC mechanics, operating engineer masters, electronic technicians and other building systems personnel in assembling, installing, replacing, repairing, coating, maintaining and operating building mechanical systems. To assist a journeyman level tradesman and to learn the trade by on-the-job training or formal instruction as prescribed by the employing agency.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

Ability to learn general building systems trades duties and responsibilities. 

Ability to use hand tools and power tools and equipment properly. 

Ability to carry, erect, climb, and maneuver on ladders and/or scaffolds; work in tight and awkward spaces; work off of roofs, cat walks, and other elevated areas. 

Ability to carry or otherwise move loads of 50 pounds or more (pipe, wire, tool boxes, etc.). 

Ability to understand University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 

Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges. 

Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work area in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries to the people or damage to the vehicles.

Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

Other Information About the Position

LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking motivated applicants for the position of Trade Apprentice.

Starting rate of pay is $16.06 per hour may be increased based on applicants’ qualifications. There is an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only.
 
Hours of Operation are 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Performs limited tasks relating to refrigeration, HVAC and building systems operations under close direction by a skilled tradesman in each of these disciplines as part of an ongoing “on-the-job” training
    • Regulates water level of systems and equipment
    • Assists skilled workers in performing major repairs
    • Oiling motors, changing belts and filters, painting and cleaning boilers, special events work
    • Performs preventative maintenance tasks
    • Properly and safely operates equipment used in daily tasks under guidance
