Job Summary/Basic Functions
The Department of Medicine, Section of Pulmonary / Critical Care at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans is seeking a self-motivated individual for a Research Associate 1, 2 or 3 position. The Research Associate supports clinical, translational, and preclinical/animal research studies by coordinating participant and animal-study activities, collecting and managing research data, and performing laboratory/biobank/sample-processing duties according to SOPs. The role must comply with all study protocols and all IRB, IACUC, HIPAA, biosafety, and institutional regulatory requirements.
RA1 – Assists and conducts study procedures within well-defined guidelines; maintains study records and materials; performs basic sample processing; supports participant scheduling and navigation.
RA2 – Functions more independently; plans activities within protocol windows; maintains sample/freezer logs; helps develop research materials; may train junior staff / trainees.
RA3 – Coordinates higher-level study operations; ensures regulatory and privacy compliance; recommends workflow improvements; trains/supervises junior team members.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education: Bachelor's
Required Field of Study: Biological science or basic science or related field
Number of years required to perform the job: RA1 - None; RA2 - Three; RA3 - Five
Type of experience required to perform the job: RA1 - None; RA2 - Minimum of three years' experience working/teaching in a research lab or on projects supported with extramural funding; RA3 - Five or more years' experience working/teaching in a research lab or on projects supported with extramural fund
Substitution: Masters Degree can substitute for one year of experience. PhD can substitute for two years of experience.
