Job Summary/Basic Functions

The incumbent will be responsible for working in production areas of Division of Animal Care facilities. The Laboratory Technician Supervisor will provide direct supervision for this position. This position will require weekend and holiday duties.

LSU Health New Orleans Division of Animal Care is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Laboratory Technical Assistant 1 or 2. There are multiple vacancies.

This position is part of a Career Progression Group (CPG).
As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a (Laboratory Technical Assistant 1 or 2) depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). There is a Special Entrance Rate for these positions.

Job Duties:

    • Operate mechanical cage wash units according to departmental standard operating procedures
    • Perform cleaning and maintenance of cage washers and related equipment to ensure proper sanitation
    • Maintain sanitary conditions of cage washing rooms and other ancillary areas, such as hallways and storage areas
    • Remove and dispose of waste according to facility guidelines
    • Prepare and assemble animal cage orders and equipment
    • Operate large specialized autoclave equipment to ensure proper sanitation and disinfection of materials used in facility
    • Perform daily general housekeeping duties
    • Organize supplies, load and unload equipment and feed
    • Participate in regularly occurring employee safety training on safe work practices and the use of personal protective equipment
  • There are some special requirements to this position:
    All new hires will be required to participate in the Division of Animal Care Occupational Health Program mandated by Federal Law.
    New Hires will complete a Risk Assessment Evaluation/Review Form, and will be scheduled for the following: Physical, Blood work which includes: Complete blood count, and blood chemistry profile, and measles titer tuberculosis testing.

  • New Hires may also be scheduled for the following:
    1. Toxoplasmosis Testing (women)
    2. Tetanus/Diphtheria Immunization
    3. Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DTP) Immunization
    4. Measles, mumps, rubella Vaccine

Compensation: Starting rate of pay for the LTA 1 is $12 and $12.84 for the LTA 2. 
Payrate is dependent upon applicants’ level of experience. There is an additional $3 Premium Pay and $1 Longevity Pay per hour for “hours worked only”.

Hours of Operation: 7:00am -4:00pm Monday - Friday every other Weekend and Holiday 6:00 am -10:00 am

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: None

Other Education if applicable: No minimum required

Number of years required to perform the job: 0 for LTA 1, 1 year for LTA 2

Type of experience required to perform the job: QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience as a phlebotomist, EKG/ECG technician, pulmonary technician, or respiratory care technician, or in the care, preparation or handling of laboratory specimens, animals, or cadavers; OR

An associate's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR

Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

Substitution: Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of the required experience.
