Job Summary/Basic Functions

OVERNIGHT SHIFT: MONDAY EVENING TO SATURDAY MORNING FROM 9:00PM – 5:30AM.

This is work mainly performing floor care and maintenance duties in buildings on the Downtown Campus. Also, may include performing general housekeeping responsibilities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

This position may be asked to respond to campus emergencies after normal business hours and during campus closures.

The employee may be assigned to the emergency team that remains on campus and or evacuates to an off-site location during emergency events.

Knowledge of complex floor care machines.

Knowledge of complex commercial floor care products.

Knowledge of disinfecting procedures.

Skill in safely operating complex floor cleaning and maintenance machines.

Skill in safely mixing and using complex chemical cleaners.

Skill in safely performing disinfecting procedures.

Ability to operate and maneuver complex floor care machines.

Ability to safely mix and use complex commercial floor care products.

Ability to understand and apply LSUHSC rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to apply safety policy and procedures for personal protection and the safety of the campus community.

Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to perform efficiently within a group as well as independently.

Ability to perform tasks requiring standing, bending, stooping, kneeling and walking significant distances between and within buildings.

Ability to push, pull, lift, or move loads of at least 35 pounds (bags of trash, cleaning carts, buffers and scrubbers, cleaning supplies and the like).

Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges between the interiors and exteriors of the buildings.

Visual ability, corrected, to observe dangerous situations in the work area (re: wet floors) in order to redirect others to avoid injury.

Other Information About the Position

• properly use appropriate floor care equipment as needed
• burnish or spray buff resilient tile floors to maintain a clean and shiny appearance
• strip and re-finish resilient tile floors to establish the clean and shiny appearance
• shampoo carpets
• deep scrub ceramic tile floors, tile grout and wall bases
•  perform daily preventive maintenance pre-checks on equipment for safety, appropriate usage and general operating condition
•  follow all established and recommended procedures for the safe and effective operation of the following equipment: backpack vacuums, wide-area vacuums, electric pressure washers, rotary floor machines, walk-behind floor burnishers, floor grout machines, wet vacuums, automatic walk-behind floor scrubbers, automatic riding floor scrubbers and canister cleaning systems
• clean all doors, door glass and door handles on both sides to remove all residue from floor care work
• clean walls to remove all residue from floor care work
• perform event set-up requests
• clean after events and reset space (as needed)

Type of experience required to perform the job: Experience in custodial, housekeeping, groundskeeping, or food service work.

Special Instructions Summary

Starting rate of pay for a Custodian 1 is $10 and Custodian 2 is $10.70 per hour. There is also an additional $1 Shift Differential and Pay $1 Longevity pay for hours worked only. Rate may be increased depending on applicants’ qualifications.
